What To Expect

Worship services are casual at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Many people wear jeans or dress "business casual." Morning service starts with Sunday school at 9:00 AM, followed by church service, which is usually a little over an hour.  We encourage you to arrive about 10 minutes before the service starts so you can get a good seat or meet and greet people. Our services start with music, often songs you might recognize if you listen to Gospel radio - Yolanda Adams, Charles Jenkins, Marvin Sapp and various artists alike. The pastor or elder teaches a bible-based message with practical application to help you live out your faith during the week.  You’re welcome to hang out and talk with people after the service.

If you have children 3 years old through 5th grade, we have Children’s Church - a fun, up-beat service that includes music, games and a bible lesson taught at their level.  We encourage middle school and high school students, to join their parents in adult service.

Our Story

Mount Zion Baptist Missionary Baptist Church was organized in the year of 1895 in the home of Brother Ed Cathey. It was formed to give the people on the east side of the Catawba River a place to worship. It was conceived from the congregation of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Bro. Cathey donated the land; and along with him, the founding fathers, Bro. Adam Reese, Bro. Joe Davis, and Bro. Underwood Tate. They cut the lumber and built the first of what is now known to us as Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, which was known as the Dixie River Community.

The first pastor of the church was Rev. T.W. Barnswell; followed by Rev. T.W. Williams, Rev. Wortz, Rev. J.T. Pearl, Rev. Douglas, Rev. J. Woodard, and Rev. Gills of Rock Hill, SC. In addition, the Rev. W.M. Neely of Gastonia and Rev. J.D. McCullough of Charlotte, NC. These pioneer ministers, along with their congregation, helped instill the pride, glory, and rich heritage we share today at Mount Zion.

In 1938, the church moved its locaiton to Route 5, Performance Road, and was pastored by Rev. E.A. Stewart and Rev. Evans. In 1946, the church was rebuilt on its same site and was ministered to by the Rev. R.E. Lindsay who was succeeded by Rev. J.A. McDaniel of Rock Hill, SC. The church continued to flourish and move on under the leadership of such pastors as Rev. W.H. Diggs, Rev. R.M. Young, Rev. W.M. Alexander, and Rev. J.E. Barnette, and Rev. Ulysses Elder.

After Rev. Ulysses Elder's departure, Mount Zion was blessed with the Rev. Daniel Edward Joseph who is still striving to uphold the rich tradition and heritage that we have come to be known by and take pride in.

In the year 1990 the church was blessed with a new home at 821 Hawley St; a modern facility that would make our fore fathers and ancestors proud that the concept conceived in brother Cathey's home in 1895 is still alive and prospering in the purpose it was originated for, "The Glory of God!"

As our church has grown, so has our love for God and the people of Mount Zion.  Our ministries include discipleship groups, including Adopt a Senior Ministry. We also encourage our members to be the hands and feet of Jesus at work, in their neighborhoods, as a part of other Mount Zion community organizations and through partnerships with missions organizations around the world.

Our Beliefs

Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour, and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.

We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge and holiness; to give it a place in our affections, prayers and services above every organization of human origin; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrine; to contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prepared us, towards its expenses, for the support of a faithful and evangelical ministry among us, the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel throughout the world. In case of difference of opinion in the church, we will strive to avoid a contentious spirit, and if we cannot unanimously agree, we will cheerfully recognize the right of the majority to govern.

We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to study diligently the word of God; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintance; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be kind and just to those in our employ, and faithful in the service we promise others; endeavoring in the purity of heart and good will towards all men to exemplify and commend our holy faith.

We further engage to watch over, to pray for, to exhort and stir up each other unto every good word and work; to guard each other's reputation, not needlessly exposing the infirmities of others; to participate in each other's joys, and with tender sympathy bear one another's burdens and sorrows; to cultivate Christian courtesy; to be slow to give or take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, being mindful of the rules of the Saviour in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, to secure it without delay; and through life, amid evil report, and good report, to seek to live the glory of God, who faith hath called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.

When we remove from this place, we engage as soon as possible to unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God's word.
